Lesvos Scuba Oceanic Centre and Yako Beach Bar-Restaurant have celebrated World Ocean Day on Friday 9th of June with 30 children from Petra school. It went just great! We organized educational and fun part, where our diving instructors and environmentalist have spoken about significant species of Aegean Sea; how they can contribute in sea conservation and, in the end, how becoming a scuba diver can be useful in marine research and protection activities. How to become “Defender of the Sea”! After, we went to the beach, where we played different games. Finally, we have handed diplomas of Project Aware to every child and teachers. Children and teachers loved the event and we agree that it will become a tradition.
We want to thank Yako beach bar&restaurant for full support and participation. We also want to thank teachers from Petra school: Αναστασιάδου Αριστέα, Ιορδανίδου Στυλιανή, Μπουμπάρη Αγγελική, Καναρίδης Δημητριος for their support and willing to be involved.
Out of respect for parents, we wont upload pictures or videos of children on our social media.
Little bit of history about World Ocean Day. Namely, officially it started to be celebrated from 1992 when Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD) and the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC) proposed this day at the Earth Summit – UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. World Oceans Day is an annual observation to honor, help protect, and conserve the world’s oceans. The ocean provides us with many resources and services including oxygen, climate regulation, food sources, medicine, and more. World Oceans Day also provides an opportunity to take personal and community action to conserve the ocean and its resources. So, beside our annual cleaning activities we introduce one more, that we are very proved of – “Defender of the Sea” and we will organize it with join every year!
